About the Author
Berys Gaut is Professor of Philosophy at the University of St Andrews, Scotland, and President of the British Society of Aesthetics. He is the author of Art, Emotion and Ethics and A Philosophy of Cinematic Art, and co-author, with Morag Gaut, of Philosophy for Young Children: A Practical Guide (Routledge, 2011).
Dominic McIver Lopes is Distinguished University Scholar and Professor of Philosophy at the University of British Columbia, Canada, and President of the American Society for Aesthetics. He is the author of Understanding Pictures, Sight and Sensibility: Evaluating Pictures, A Philosophy of Computer Art (Routledge, 2009) and Beyond Art.

A Comprehensive and Authoritative Survey of the Field

This anthology is comprehensive and authoritative. It has essays by leading figures in philosophical aesthetics writing accessibly in their areas of expertise, making it an ideal survey for students, teachers, and any reader seriously interested in the state of the philosophy of art today. I have worked through about a third of the essays so far. Highlights for me included the Carroll, Shusterman, D. Davies, Gilmore, John, Lamarque, and Parsons essays. Although predominantly representative of Anglo American aesthetics, the anthology takes on some Continental thinking (Merleau-Ponty, Heidegger, Foucault, Barthes, Derrida), which is welcome. The inclusion of essays on comparatively recent thinkers like Goodman, Sibley, and Wollheim is also welcome; a pity there wasn't one on Danto. There is a particular emphasis on art and its contributions to knowledge. I do want to stress that it is an introductory survey and while substantive is not as technical as some of these authors' work is elsewhere, so it might be a little basic for practicing aesthetic philosophers--but they would presumably know that just by looking at the Table of Contents. Highly recommended.
