About the Author

Cindy J. Smith is a retired faculty member of the University of Baltimore, Maryland, USA, the former Chief of the International Center at the National Institute of Justice (2006–8), and a Senior Fulbright Research Scholar in Turkey (2005–6). She was the Director of the Master's in Criminal Justice program (2001–5), and Chair of the International Division of the American Society of Criminology (2005–9). Her research interests include terrorism, human trafficking, corrections, sex offenders, and comparative methodology.

Sheldon X. Zhang is Professor of Sociology at San Diego State University. His research interests include criminal enterprise, transnational organized crime, community corrections, and program evaluation. He has authored three books and his articles have appeared in Criminology, British Journal of Criminology, Research in Crime and Delinquency, Criminology and Public Policy, and Crime and Delinquency.

Rosemary Barberet is an associate professor in the Sociology Department at John Jay College of Criminal Justice (CUNY), where she directs the Master's program in International Crime and Justice. Her publications have dealt with victimology, crime measurement, and comparative methodology. She is the recipient of the 2006 Herbert Bloch Award of the American Society of Criminology.

About the Author

Kathleen A. Kendall-Tackett is a health psychologist and an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant. She is a Clinical Associate Professor of Pediatrics at Texas Tech University School of Medicine in Amarillo, Texas. Dr. Kendall-Tackett is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association in the Divisions of Health and Trauma Psychology, and is Associate Editor of the journal Psychological Trauma. She is also the author of more than 220 journal articles, book chapters and other publications, and author or editor of 19 books in the fields of trauma, women’s health, depression, and breastfeeding.

Dr. Kendall-Tackett's exploration of the topic is comprehensive, well-cited, and recognizably accurate. Professionals and clinicians who work with new mothers will be exceptionally well-served to have this tremendous resource on their bookshelves. It is of such immediate practical usefulness that they are likely to find that their copies are well-thumbed and dog-eared in short order.

An Essential Resource

If, like me, you work with women during the perinatal period, this book is an essential resource. As an expert in the field, Dr. Kendall-Tackett has the experience, the familiarity with the research, and the perspective to explain clearly to the rest of us what we need to know, and she does it in a clear, easy-to-understand format. In this book, she debunks common myths (for example, that postpartum depression is mostly hormonal), explains risk factors, assessment tools, and treatments--including both prescribed and herbal medications and their compatibility with breastfeeding. She also discusses possible long-term effects of both negative and traumatic childbirths and provides specific approaches for helping women process these experiences so that they can learn from them and move on. This is a book I will turn to often in my work. I highly recommend it!

Extremely helpful and interesting

This book is a "must" for any health care professional who works with new mothers. Dr. Kendall-Tackett cites research to back up every statement she makes. One might think that this would lead to a useful, though dry, book - but this is not the case. Depression in New Mothers is an interesting and valuable read. Highly recommended to anyone who helps new mothers in any way.

Standard overview of the PLA for military professionals

This is an authoritative work and the current standard volume for western military professionals looking at the Chinese military. For the more casual reader interested in a feel for the PLA, including its history, but without a lot of currency, I'd recommend Dragons Teeth Inside Chinas Armed Forces which includes some good images (though the author gets a bit fixated on women in the Chinese army).

Indispensable Reference on the PLA

The China Army Today will serve as an indispensable reference for anyone researching or writing about Chinese military affairs until the next major PLA reorganization. The book contains an excellent mix of analysis and factual accounting of the PLA. Do you want to know where the 40th Group Army is located and what units compose it? How does the PLA conceive of campaigns? How has military doctrine developed? What is the PLA's place in China today? From the granular to the systemic, Dennis Blasko provides readers with authoritative answers or guides for how to research and think about the PLA on its own terms and in its own words.

The book is organized in a thoughtful, systematic manner addressing the PLA in the manner of Rudyard Kipling's poetic line: "I keep six honest serving men (They taught me all I knew); their names are What and Why and When and How and Where and Who." Readers will find well-sourced guides to PLA units, equipment, doctrinal development, training, civil-military relations, and the general thrust of Chinese military modernization. The author's extensive use of Chinese-language sources shows there is more information available on the PLA than many people are aware. This attention to detail also will give reader a better sense of where the PLA's lack of transparency actually lies. Indeed, some of the most useful parts of the book are where Blasko discusses the gaps in foreign knowledge of the PLA that cannot be easily resolved. For example, in his discussion of the Chinese defense budget (pp. 10-13), Blasko addresses the sources of information on China's defense budget, what Beijing has revealed (and failed to include), and what observers would like to know.

About the Author

Jonathan Barnett is a professor and director of the Urban Design Program at the University of Pennsylvania, a former director of urban design for the New York City Planning Department, and an advisor on many projects in the United States, China, Korea, Cambodia, and Mexico. He has written extensively about city design theory and practice. Educated at Yale and the University of Cambridge, he is a Fellow of both the American Institute of Architects and the American Institute of Certified Planners.

Love this book.

This book is so interesting. A scope of various City Designs captivated me. When I was reading this book, I realized that it not only talks about Landscape Architecture, but also a little about everything related to the field; Architecture, Planning, Development, Engineering, etc.

As to the quality, even though it's not hard cover, it's held up really good to my constant use.

The best for Hungarian grammar

I found this book to be amazingly useful after I had mastered the basics. It clears up a lot of rules and exceptions that other books tend to glaze over. I've heard people complain that it uses too much linguistic jargon, but guess what: you don't need to know what a linguist calls something to know how to use it. It would be difficult to use starting out, in that it does assume you know quite a bit off the bat.

Also, what's all this confusion about cases in other reviews? Anyone who's studied the language would know that most of the so-called 24 "cases" in Hungarian aren't like the cases you'd find in German, Russian, or even English. Case, in a traditional sense, is required by the grammar but doesn't affect meaning. In German the only difference between "Ich liebe du" and "Ich liebe dich" is that the grammar demands you say "dich." The locative cases in Hungarian aren't cases in this traditional sense. There's a difference in meaning between "Megyek a boltBA" and "Megyek a boltBÓL, máshova...", but the grammar doesn't require you use one not the other to make the sentence sound right. If anything, I find Hungarian cases to be easier than German or English, because I don't have to memorize gender variants and they're not there solely for the grammar.

Cases more so differ from postpositions in that they're attached to the word and follow vowel harmony. Every textbook teaches the two separately. I think the book is excellently organized, in that I could easily find whatever topic I was looking for by chapter heading.

An essential buy

You need all the help you can get when trying to learn Hungarian and it is hard to imagine a better grammar than this one. It is very complete yet all explanations are perfectly clear - no jargon - and accompanied by straightforward examples. The general layout is first-rate: answers to the many problems of learning are easy to find thanks to good chapter layout and a comprehensive index.

Necessary

This product is extremely helpful in learning Hungarian. My family is Hungarian, so I have been trying to learn the language, and this has proven to be by far the most helpful in understanding grammar. Explanations make sense and are concise. Learning Hungarian actually seemed easy once I had this book. It'd probably be more helpful if you are familiar with a language with a case system, but I think it explains it pretty well. $40 well spent.
