I'm using this book for my SOS 300 class, and its many essays cover the widest array of sustainability topics that you can dream of. It covers everything from urban Tokyo to historian preservatives and conservationists working together for a sustainable end.

Eh, not my style

This book challenges my preconceived notions about what a text book cam be. Each chapter feels like a particularly boring and pretentious journal article rather than part of a cohesive whole. It is a good intro into the writing in scientific journals, though.The text is tiny and there are a number of smudges in the ink on my copy.

I bought this book because I have to write a 25 page paper on the refugee population and social work. This book is written by the most notorious author to write about refugee issues. It has given me a lot of information and ideas for my paper. I would still read this book for my own personal enjoyment if I didn't need it for academic purposes.

Great info but a boring read

We've all had one of "Those" textbooks that we dread trying to read. This is one of them. This book has so much valuable content and information but it's quite dry, boring, and a little hard to stick with. My professor suggested it's a great book to keep after graduation as a "go-to" bookshelf item. Not likely. I'm selling this thing as soon as I can.

Craig N. Murphy is M. Margaret Ball Professor of International Relations at Wellesley College. He is past president of the International Studies Association, past chair of the Academic Council on the UN System and a founding editor of the international public policy journal, Global Governance.

JoAnne Yates is Sloan Distinguished Professor of Management and Deputy Dean at MIT’s Sloan School of Management. Her research encompasses both historical and contemporary organizations with a focus on changing communication and information technologies and the related work practices.

In Spain between 1936-1945, the Franco regime carried out one Europe’s more brutal but less remembered programs of mass repression. Many were murdered by the regime’s death squads, and in some areas Francoists also subjected up to 15% of the population to summary military trials. Although historians have recognised the staggering scale of the trials, they have tended to overlook the mass participation that underpinned them. In contrast to the discussion in other European countries, little attention has been paid to the wide scale collusion in the killings and incarcerations in Spain.

Exploring mass complicity in the trials of hundreds of thousands of defeated Republicans following the end of the Spanish Civil War, The Francoist Military Trials probes local Francoists’ accusations whereby victims were selected for prosecution in military courts. It also shows how insubstantial and hostile testimony formed the bedrock of ‘investigations’, secured convictions, and shaped the harsh sentencing practices of Franco’s military judges. Using civil court records, it also documents how grassroots Francoists continued harassing Republicans for many years after they emerged from prison. Challenging the popularly prevalent view that the Franco regime imposed a police state upon a passive Spanish society, the evidence Anderson uncovers here illustrates that local state officials and members of the regime’s support base together forged a powerful repressive system that allowed them to wage war on elements of their own society to a greater extent than perhaps even the Nazis managed against their own population.

About the Author

Philip Auslander is a Professor in the School of Literature, Communication, and Culture of the Georgia Institute of Technology where he teaches Performance Studies, Media Studies, and Popular Music. He is a contributing editor to the US-based TDR: The Journal of Performance Studies and the Journal of American Drama and Theater, as well as the UK-based Performance Research and Journal of Performance Arts and Digital Media. He contributes regularly to these and other journals and has published five books, including Presence and Resistance: Postmodernism and Cultural Politics in Contemporary American Performance (University of Michigan, 1992), From Acting to Performance: Essays in Modernism and Postmodernism (Routledge, 1997), and Liveness: Performance in a Mediatized Culture (Routledge 1999). He received the prestigious Callaway Prize for the Best Book in Theatre or Drama for Liveness. His most recent book is Performing Glam Rock: Gender and Theatricality in Popular Music (University of Michigan, 2006). Auslander is the editor of Performance: Critical Concepts, a reference collection in four volumes published by Routledge in 2003 and, with Carrie Sandahl, co-editor of Bodies in Commotion: Performance and Disability (University of Michigan Press, 2005). In addition to his scholarly work on performance, Prof. Auslander writes art criticism for ArtForum and other publications.

Liveness/Performance/Media Studies Must!

This is still the go-to performance studies text for thinking through issues of liveness vs. mediatization. Auslander explores how the concept of liveness is in fact a culturally and historically specific concept that only came into existence once recording technology was invented. While the main case study is theatrical performance, Auslander also includes interrogations of rock concerts and even court proceedings.

His main claim revolves around the following suggestion: though theatre once influenced technologized media such as television (affecting the way early TV was formatted and advertised to viewers), it has since lost the battle for cultural relevance. Now the theatre adopts techniques common to television, cinema, and the internet, which in turn lessens the perceived differences between live and mediatized performance. This causes him to question "whether there really are clear-cut ontological distinctions between live forms and mediatized ones" (7). This is an exciting and somewhat audacious claim, and one that many scholars since have productively taken up and/or argued against.

One does not necessarily have to agree with Auslander to recognize the importance of his meditation. This text is well worth the read for anyone studying or just thinking through issues of live performance in a media-dominated world.

What I don't like about this, so far, though it hasn't yet totally begun, is their familiar way of addressing the audience, as if we were all friends. I don't mind so much the implication that the performers are my friends, but I mind the implication that I am their friend. This is a bad seduction strategy. Surely that's what it is, a way to get the audience involved and to make them feel at home. But I don't want to be seduced by my friends, especially when they are only pretending to be my friends in order to seduce me. I do perhaps wish I was being more literal.

Oh, now there is singing.
