Akhil Gupta is Professor of Anthropology at the University of California in Los Angeles. His research interests lie in political anthropology, cultural theory and cultural geography, postcolonial studies, development, and food and the environment.

K. Sivaramakrishnan is Professor of Anthropology at Yale University. An environmental historian and political anthropologist, his research interests include colonial and contemporary forest and nature conservation in South Asia, rural and regional development, comparative social theory, and the cultural geography of migration in India.

A. Trevor Thrall is Associate Professor of Government and Politics and directs the Biodefense graduate program at George Mason University. Much of his work focuses on the intersection of war, news, and public opinion. His recent work has investigated presidential threat inflation, public support for missile defense, and how changes in the news media have affected US foreign policy.

Whitney Bauman is Assistant Professor of Religion and Science at Florida International University. He is the author of Theology, Creation, and Environmental Ethics (Routledge, 2009) and Assistant Editor for the Encyclopedia of Sustainability: Spirituality (Berkshire, 2009).

Richard R. Bohannon II teaches in the Environmental Studies and Theology departments at the College of St. Benedict and St. John’s University, and is a Ph.D. candidate in Religion and Society at Drew University. His publications include "Constructing Nature at a Chapel in the Woods" in Ecospirit: Religion and Philosophies for the Earth (Fordham, 2007).

Start your soul-searching here

If you are concerned about the way we treat Nature (and each other, for that matter) and, like an increasing number of people, at least suspect that there is a lot of soul-searching that we need to do in order to start mending the mess we have done over centuries, this is a wonderful place to start. The authors manage to make a beautiful, easy to follow read out of some of the most disturbing issues we face today, which is a HUGE plus. I have been professionally involved in the sustainability field for over a decade and every day I grow more and more convinced that we will not outgrow our contradictions and dangerous Western progress and wellbeing paradigms unless we search deep within to stop this meaningless rat race which, even if it has made some -fewer everyday- more materially affluent, it has failed miserably to make us any happier and it threatens everything there is to be cherished and revered, let alone our very survival. The book provides lots of insightful questions, seeking not to indoctrinate but to awaken, which, in my opinion, is exactly what we need. Moreover, they provide great recommended readings at the end of each chapter.

Great introduction to the subject matter

I bought this book for a class on religion and ecology, and found it very interesting. This is a clear, well-rounded introduction to the field. And, in my opinion, this book is a more entertaining read than a lot of academic texts. While still scholarly, the tone is more direct than other theoretical, social science books I've read.

Terrorist Behavior

Harmon's work on terrorism should be required reading for professional and academic researchers in the subject area of terrorism and political violence. His many inline examples help to elucidate the relationships between fundamental political theories and terminologies to violent acts of extremism and fundamentalism. For me this book was important because it provided an additional point of reference to my research on terrorist organizational behavior and leadership Terrorist Organizational Behavior(ISBN-13: 978-0615687391). I recommend this book to those interested in the behaviors of individuals and groups involved in terrorism.

Worth Owning a Copy

I own the affordable paperback version, and I'm glad I do because this is one of the best books out there on terrorism. Sure, the writing is a little scattered with snippets or profiles of different terrorist groups to illustrate various points, but the flow is great and the insights are just at a very high level. I particularly enjoyed how the book seems to read like a series of intelligence estimates, but this is due to the author's background, I guess. It's not only a great book on terrorism, but one that a reader may come back to time and time again to get some new insight out of it.

Awesome book for a different perspective

I got this book because I was taking an advanced international relations theory course and was struggling to understand the complex nature of some of the theories. If you have looked at any of the theories, you know that the standard textbook explanations can sometimes be a little vague and it seems a little hard to wrap my head around the idea of realism, or liberalism.
This book takes a unique approach by relating each theory to a specific movie and using plot points to convey the theories meaning. It was a huge help in figuring out the applications of each theory. I would definitely reccommend this to anyone studying international relations theory. The only reason I'm not rating it 5/5 is because it didn't go over all the theories that I covered in my class, but all the general theories are covered.

An outstanding IR book

I have been following this outstanding book from its 2nd edition. The 3rd edition is even better.

The book uses film as a tool for addressing fundamental questions (the book eloquently refers to them as "myths") of International Relations and Global Politics. It is very well written and very enjoyable in the Kindle edition (which is the one I bought).

The time you spend reading this book will be time well invested and a lot of fun as you watch the movies from a uniquely different angle.

Superb introductory text everyone should read!

This is an excellent introduction to international relations theory that is easy to grasp. The novelty is how the author uses film to explain how IR theory works. At the end of each chapter is also a nice summation of the theory and where to go to learn more. I have been using this book for the past two months and have gone back and ready many of the works that she has discussed in her book. It has helped me to understand IR theory, how it works and the debates in the field, and it has helped me with a lot of my assignments, too. Anyone having trouble grasping IR theory should read this and then go back and read some other IR theory introductions (there are some other ones that are a bit more comprehensive -- but sometimes more difficult ot grasp -- such as Making Sense Of International Relations Theory, Theories of International Relations: Fourth Edition, or International Relations Theory (5th Edition) (this book includes many of the works by the original theorists that are appended to the ends of some chapters).

My only complaint about the book was that there was a lack of connection to actual international relations events/happenings. It would have been nice if the author made more connections to real world events. I also didn't enjoy the connection to cinema as much as I thought I would, although it did help me to understand the theory. I often glossed over these sections of the chapters, especially if I felt like the initial explanation made sense to me.

I bought the Kindle version which is nice, but sometimes the tables and graphics disrupt the text a bit.

An antidote to the philosophical ineptitude of contemporary IR

Jackson's book should be required reading for every graduate student in IR. It acts as both a primer in the philosophy of social science and as an unembarrassed argument against the unreflective neopositivism that continues to dominate the epistemological presuppositions of the field.

Jackson argues that, even when self-conscious about its foundations, IR neopositivism results from a misappropriation of the insights of Popper-Kuhn-Lakatos and from a yearning to be "more scientific." This constructed view rests on a mind-world gap, where "methods" build the bridge from subjectivity to objectivity, despite the fact that contemporary philosophers (e.g. John McDowell, Robert Brandom, Donald Davidson) have repudiated this scheme-content dualism.

Jackson exposes the fact that the overwhelming majority of so-called "methodological" discussions in IR, as within political science more generally, are actually discussions about particular methods for the purposes of achieving neopositivist goals. Thus, those who studiously weigh the benefits of "quantitative" verses "qualitiative" methods (and yes even "mixed methods") are doing so within the strictures of neopositivist presuppositions.

The book calls for the loosening of the methodological grip that unreflective neopositivism has on the field of IR.

Although Jackson is an astute reader of philosophy there are several confusions that have crept in. For example, in his second chapter he seems to have confused "philosophical realism" with "ontological dualism."

Nonetheless, his book is the antidote to the philosophical ineptitude in contemporary IR. It will be particularly helpful for IR scholars in the United States - where, we are always told, the center of gravity for the discipline still remains. Other scholars who are more familiar with philosophical modes of inquiry will find this book less enlightening.

excellent book for doctoral students

This book is a must for all Ph.D. students in international relations (as well as their professors). It is a brilliant work that provides much-needed insight into the schools of thought in IR.

Having said that, I'd caution readers that it is intensely philosophical; people should be well versed in philosophy as well as IR before tackling it. This book is for a specific audience.

Global companies can alleviate poverty by seizing market opportunities at the Base of the economic Pyramid (BoP) with the implementation of three key processes: moral imagination, systems thinking, and deep dialogue.

About the Author

Patricia H. Werhane is the Peter and Adeline Ruffin Chair of Business Ethics and Senior Fellow at the Olsson Center for Applied Ethics in the Darden Graduate School of Business Administration at the University of Virginia and also hold a joint appointment as the Callista Wicklander Chair of Business Ethics and Director, Institute for Business and Professional Ethics, at DePaul University. She has been a Rockefeller Fellow at Dartmouth College, an Arthur Andersen Fellow at the Judge Institute, Cambridge University, and Erskine Visiting Fellow at the University of Canterbury in New Zealand. She is the founding editor of Business Ethics Quarterly.

Scott P. Kelley is Assistant Vice-President for Vincentian Scholarship in the Office of Mission and Values at DePaul University. He has also served as a research fellow at the Institute for Business and Professional Ethics and as Visiting Assistant Professor in the Department of Religious Studies, teaching courses in Business Ethics.
