About the Author

Michael Haas devoted most of his career as a Professor of Political Science at the University of Hawai`i to teaching, research, and public service centring on human rights. He not only filed civil rights complaints that resulted in the adoption of affirmative action in the Aloha State to benefit all races, including Caucasians, Filipinos, and Native Hawaiians, but he also played a role in stopping the secret funding by Washington that reached the Khmer Rouge during the 1980s. He recently conferred honorary doctorate degrees in his current role as Chair of the International Academic Advisory Council at the University of Cambodia.

The penultimate chapter considers the impact of broad economic changes such as the globalization of trade and communications on gender differences in economic activity and the final chapter addresses international progress towards gender equality as measured by the global gender gap. The text is particularly strong on environmental aspects and the new edition builds on this to consider the effects of climate change and declining natural resources illustrated by a case study of changing gender roles in fishing in India. There is also enhanced coverage of topics such as global trade, sport as a development tool, masculinities, and sustainable agriculture. Maps, statistics, references and boxed case studies have been updated throughout and their coverage widened.

About the Author

Janet Momsen recently retired from the University of California, Davis as Professor of Geography although she is still working with several postgraduate students there. She is now affiliated with the University of Oxford as a Senior Research Associate in the School of the Environment and in International Gender Studies. She has taught at several universities in England, in Canada, Brazil, Costa Rica and in the USA and carried out field research in the Caribbean, Brazil, Costa Rica, Ghana, Mexico, China, Bangladesh and Hungary.

Drawing on extensive fieldwork conducted in Egypt from the late 1990s to 2011, this book shows how experts and activists used distinctive approaches to influence state and firm decision-making in three important environmental policy domains. These include; industrial pollution from large-scale industry, the conservation of threatened habitat, and water management of the irrigation system.

These cases show how environmental networks sought to construct legal, discursive, and infrastructural forms of authority within the context of a fragmented state apparatus and a highly centralized political regime. ‘Managerial networks’, composed of environmental scientists, technocrats, and consultants, sought to create new legal regimes for environmental protection and to frame environmental concerns so that they would appeal to central decision-makers. Activist networks, in contrast, emerged where environmental pollution or exclusion from natural resources threatened local livelihoods and public health. These networks publicized their concerns and mobilized broader participation through the creative use of public space, media coverage, and strategic use of existing state-sanctioned organizations.

With the increased popular mobilization of the 2000s, and the mass protests of the 2011 revolution, environmental politics has become highly topical. Expert and activist networks alike have sought to broaden their appeal and diversify their approaches. The result may well be a more contested, participatory, and dynamic phase in Egyptian environmentalism.

About the Author

Guy Martin, who is currently professor of political science at Winston-Salem State University in Winston-Salem, NC) has over 30 years of teaching and research experience in International Studies. He taught International Relations and International Organizations at various diplomatic institutions in Africa―Institute of International Relations of Cameroon, Yaoundė; Institute of Diplomacy & International Studies, Nairobi; School of Government, University of the Western Cape, Cape Town―and at various U.S academic institution, notably The American University, University of Virginia, and New York University. In addition to Africa in World Politics: A Pan-African Perspective, Guy is co-editor (with Chris Alden) of France and South Africa: Towards A New Engagement with Africa (Pretoria: Protea Book House, 2003); and co-author (with Mueni wa Muiu) of A New Paradigm of the African State: Fundi wa Afrika (New York: Palgrave Macmillan, 2009).

Mueni wa Muiu, is currently associate professor of political science at Winston-Salem State University, where she teaches International Relations.

Xun Wu is Assistant Professor at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy at the National University of Singapore, specializing in policy reforms in developing countries, with emphasis on social and environmental sectors.

M Ramesh is Professor of Social Policy at the University of Hong Kong. His teaching and research are concentrated in public policy, social policy, and political economy in Asia.

Michael Howlett teaches at the Simon Fraser University, Canada and the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy at the National University of Singapore. His areas of specialization include public policy analysis, political economy, and resource and environmental policy.

Scott A. Fritzen is Associate Professor at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, National University of Singapore, specializes in governance reform and capacity strengthening in developing countries.

Succint and detailed

Great book on the stages of the policy process. A bit on the short side, but there is an extensive bibliography at the end of each chapter. The explanations are common sense and easy to follow, and the author provides excellent examples to describe the various stages. There is also advice for policy managers and those involved in the processes and offers important advice on what to do (and not to do). Highly recommend for those who are studying public administration/policy.

About the Author

Tudor Rickards is Professor of Creativity at Manchester Business School, UK. He is founding co-editor (with Susan Moger) of the journal Creativity and Innovation Management. His extensive publications include Dilemmas of Leadership, published by Routledge in 2006.

Mark A. Runco is E. Paul Torrance Endowed Professor of Creative Studies at the University of Georgia, USA. He is also a Professor at the Norwegian School of Economics and Business. He has published extensively and is editor of the Creativity Research Journal.

Susan Moger is a Senior Fellow in Leadership at Manchester Business School, UK. She is founding co-editor of the journal Creativity and Innovation Management and has written a number of books, including the Handbook for Creative Team Leaders, written with Tudor Rickards and published by Gower in 1999.
