The author presents a synopsis of selected issues including: language, truth and reconciliation, the Catholic Church’s political activism, internal security problems, the ‘politics of oil’, and the fact that violent conflicts, from 2005 to date, have made it necessary for the United Nation’s peacekeeping forces to return. Thus far, the book argues, Timor Leste’s nation-building efforts have been hampered by the dynamic interaction of number of national and international factors.  The first comprehensive political and cultural history of East Timor to date, this book fills a gap and will be an important single reference resource for students and researchers in the field of Southeast Asian Studies, Anthropology and Political Science.

About the Author

Todd R. Clear is Dean of the School of Criminal Justice at Rutgers University, Newark NJ, USA. He is a past president of the American Society of Criminology and the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences.

John Hamilton is Associate Professor of Criminal Justice Administration at Park University. He retired at the rank of Major from the Kansas City, Missouri Police Department after 26½ years of service. He has extensive experience in community policing and problem solving, and is also member of the Board of Directors for Synergy Services, Inc.

Eric Cadora is Founder and Director of the Justice Mapping Center. Prior to establishing the Center, he has served as Program Officer for The After Prison Initiative at the Open Society Institute; as Director for Research and Policy, Court Communications, and Day Centre divisions of the Centre for Alternative Sentencing and Employment Services (CASES); and has also conducted graduate work at New York University.

I liked this book because it has a unique account of the personal and political issues facing refugees. The authors share their own family histories of immigration into the United States in the 1900's from Eastern Europe. The interviews are especially interesting. There is an excellent account of the laws that effect refugees as well.
