John R. Cutcliffe is Acadia Professor of Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing at the University of Maine, USA. He is also Adjunct Professor of Nursing at the University of Ulster, UK and the University of Malta, the Associate Editor (Americas) for the International Journal of Mental Health and an Assistant Editor for the International Journal of Nursing Studies.

Fascinating read for anyone involved in terror prevention, security studies, or political science

The Internet has revolutionized how we socialize and do business, speeding commerce, facilitating knowledge sharing, and creating networks that could not have existed a decade ago. Unfortunately, terrorists reap the same benefits. Global Terrorism and New Media: The Post-Al Qaeda Generation is a fascinating new book that provides an excellent over­view of how terrorist organizations use today's technology to spread their message.

The book opens with the observation that communication is at the heart of terrorism. The principal accomplishment of al Qaeda on 9-11 was not mass murder and destruction of property but rather terrifying millions and, by doing so, changing the way people live the world over.

The authors note the central role news media plays in defining terrorism. Knowing this, terrorists calculate the consequences of their deeds and the likely scope of media coverage to inject themselves into the conversation of civil society. The authors also discuss how terrorist organizations often make full use of various technologies, including producing periodicals for their followers to learn about using electronic data security to evade detection online by authorities.

From Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, online forums, and more, terrorist organizations are making full use of Web 2.0. Hez­bollah, the authors note, used Facebook to try to arrange meetings with Israeli soldiers in the attempt to kidnap them. Elsewhere, terrorists use the Web to exchange confidential information for money.

To fight the terrorist threat, Yuval Diskin, head of Israel's internal security service, recently observed that "countries need to cooperate closely and develop technology together to counter new threats."

The authors concede that there's no easy way to stop terrorists' extensive use of new media. The best approach may be to create a comprehensive communications strategy, executed via new media, to counter the extremists' messages. So far, extremists who embrace violence have done a superior job of mastering these tools, but there is no reason why they should be allowed to maintain the upper hand.

Global Terrorism and New Media is a fascinating read and of benefit to anyone involved in terror prevention, security studies, or political science.

An excellent debate by academic historians about the merits and shortcomings of Professor Mark Moyar's 2006 book, "Triumph Forsaken", a revisionist history of the Vietnam War 1954-65. Moyar's access to previously unavailable resources, especially North Vietnamese records, while researching his book helps him refute, or at least call into question, previous "orthodox" scholarship about the early years of the war leading up to the massive US intervention in 1965. Suffice it to say that the "orthodox" historians, many of them baby boomers who opposed the war in the 1960s and early 1970s, were not pleased.

Moyar's key points are discussed--(1) that relations between China and Vietnam were historically peaceful and friendly; (2) that Vietnam was divided between North and South for much of its history, and unity was the exception and not the rule; (3) that Ho Chi Minh was first and foremost a dedicated communist, and a Vietnamese nationalist secondarily; (4) that Ngo Dinh Diem was an effective non-communist nationalist leader in South Vietnam; (5) that young U.S. newspaper reporters in Saigon, Neil Sheehan and David Halberstam, provided inaccurate and one-sided negative coverage of the Diem regime that carried too much weight back in the U.S.; (6) that Diem opponent and Buddhist monk Tri Quang was probably a communist; and (7) that the U.S.-backed coup and assassination of Diem and his brother Nhu was a key mistake which negatively affected subsequent historical events and led to the massive US military intervention to prevent South Vietnam from falling to communists in 1965.

Personally, my main disagreement with Moyar is that he minimizes the danger of Chinese intervention in the event of a U.S. invasion of North Vietnam, especially in 1964. LBJ (or JFK had he not been assassinated) would not have launched a war against North Vietnam before the November 1964 election. I seriously doubt that LBJ would have ever risked Chinese military intervention, as occurred in Korea, by pursuing a ground invasion of North Vietnam in 1965 or thereafter. At best, LBJ might have been convinced to dramatically step up the bombing of North Vietnam and mine Hiaphong and other North Vietnamese harbors in 1965-68, as Nixon did in 1972. That being said, I look forward to the promised second volume of Moyar's "Triumph Forsaken."

Proof Positive that Dr. Moyar is right

I had to give this three stars because I didn't find it an easy read. I felt I had to read it to find out what others might have to say about Dr. Moyar's book Triumph Forsaken. The general feel I got was that those who had spent their time as an academic and have studied just the orthodox version of Vietnam, were not willing to accept Dr. Moyars book. They might try to say something nice about it and then nit pick it over something trivial. Dr. Moyar was able to give his side of the argument at the end of each chapter. I found that some of those that disagreed with Dr. Moyar found it hard to address him or his work with his proper title for fear that it would give his work legitimacy. As for me, a Vietnam veteran, Dr. Moyar's has settled my mind forever on the subject and I can not wait till his follow up book comes out. To me its as if Dr. Moyar took a jumbled up 2000 piece jig-saw puzzle and put it together. The people that contributed to this book,Triumph Revisited, tried to remove one piece of that 2000 piece puzzle to prove that the whole thing was wrong. They failed. I do wish that the editors had put Dr. Moyars rebuttals to each author at the end of their papers and not put them all together at the end of each chapter. One last very important note. In chapter nine,page 107, Robert Turner advises the reader to read Robert Elegant article " How to Lose A War: The Press and Vietnam," it is on line at [...] this is a great article.

About the Author

Ona Cohn Bregman, MSS is former Associate Professor of Social Work at Syracuse University, chair of the School of Social Work’s Family Mental Health Concentration from 1991 to 1998, selected by her peers as "Social Work Teacher of the Year" in 1995, and served on the board of the Syracuse Family Center from 1991 to 2001. The Mental Health Association of Onondaga County, NY awarded Ms. Bregman their Lifetime Achievement award in 2007. She continues a small clinical and supervisory practice in semi-retirement.

Charles M. White, MSW, is a social work field liaison with Rutgers University’s School of Social Work (New Brunswick and Newark, NJ) and a doctoral student at Rutgers University’s Graduate School―New Brunswick. He also maintains a Bowen theory–based psychotherapy, supervision, consultation, and training practice in Westfield, NJ. Since completing his Master of Social Work degree at Syracuse University in 1992, Mr. White has held several clinical, supervisory, research, and adjunct academic positions.
