Excellent for students of Race & Ethnicity

I appreciate getting the first review of this book, published in 2011. I purchased this as a textbook for a college course on African American studies; our other book is the Black Studies Reader (by Jaqueline Bobo, Cynthia Hudley, Claudine Michel). The Routledge Companion includes excellent articles on history and relationship between race and ethnicity, impact of colonialism & nationalism, European subjugation of indigenous peoples, concepts of "whiteness," political and social implications, how race and ethnicity relate to personal identity, gender and sexual orientation. Effects of globalization, media, popular culture. The essays introduce students to some of the fundamental concepts and issues related to race and ethnicity. Includes a section on definitions, concepts, authors and leaders.
This is indeed a college level text: while some articles read easily, others are more involved and complex. I read all the essays by the 5th week of the course; some I had to read more than once for full comprehension. Some read like a historical piece, others focus on analysis and effects, all relate to our current state of affairs. --from a global citizen, with an electronics engineering degree

This book analyses the American way of war within the context of Clausewitzian theory. In doing so, it draws conclusions about the origins, viability, and technical feasibility of America’s current strategic approach.

The author argues that the situation in which America has found itself in Iraq is the direct result of a culturally predisposed inclination to substitute technology for strategy. This habit manifests most extremely in the form of the Network-Centric Warfare/Effects-Based Operations (NCW/EBO) construct, which by and large has failed to deliver on its many promises. This book argues that the fundamental problem with the NCW/EBO – and with US defence transformation, generally – is that it centres on technology at the expense of other dynamics, notably the human one. Taking a fresh perspective on US strategic cultural predispositions in an era of persistent military conflict, the author argues for the necessity of America’s revising its strategic paradigm in favour of a more holistic brand of strategy.

Emily Lenning is an Assistant Professor of Criminal Justice at Fayetteville State University. Her areas of interest include state crime, the social construction of deviance, media representations of crime and justice, and transgender issues. Her most current work explores the systematic and mass rapes of Nigerian women at the hands of state-endorsed military groups and the problematic nature of gendered language.

Sara Brightman is a Ph.D candidate at Western Michigan University. Her areas of interest broadly include feminist theory, global feminism, feminist criminology, state-corporate crime as well as feminist epistemology and methodology. Recent projects have focused on state violence by police against women in Pakistan, and state-corporate violence against women in Nigeria.

Susan Caringella is an internationally known expert on rape, feminism, and criminology.
