Drawing on diverse approaches, this text constitutes an important intervention in critical international relations, providing grounded theory and sophisticated analyses of how contemporary international relations works through the production of ‘exceptions’.

About the Author

Shampa Biswas is Associate Professor of Politics and Director of Global Studies at Whitman College in Walla Walla, Washington, U.S.A. Dr. Biswas has worked and published extensively in the areas of postcolonial international relations, critical security studies and the politics of development.

Sheila Nair is Professor of Politics and International Affairs at Northern Arizona University, USA. Dr. Nair co-edited the volume, Power, Postcolonialism and International Relations: Reading Race, Gender and Class (Routledge 2002). She has also written and published on postcolonial human rights and protest movements, nationalism, and Malaysian politics among other topics.

Decent book, terrible on the Kindle

The book itself is fine, but the Kindle edition isn't good at all.

They shrink the graphics down so that they can't be read. The graphics are also not made to look like the book, and instead are just slapped in, taking up half the page, but the resolution is so low that I can't read the important information.

Not Just for Therapists--Also for Patients!

HSP therapist (who, alas, is across the country from me) Ane Axford recently recommended this book to HSPs, not just therapists to HSPs. As I am about to get back into therapy with a new therapist (or therapists, if the first one doesn't work out), I decided to read this book and see if it had any insights for my process of finding a therapist and going through therapy. The book is a fabulous addition to the Highly Sensitive Person books. I'm finding that it gives me new insights into how I relate to the world. If you've read one or more of the other HSP books by Elaine Aron and found them useful, and you're looking for a greater understanding of yourself, I recommend picking this one up as well.

HSP book for practitioners

I wish I could make all the professional people I know read this book. As a HSP (Highly Sensitive Person) and mom of a HSP, I see the labels that are put on us, like we are broken or abnormal. No, we are not. The linear-brained world just doesn't get us global (whole brain) thinkers. All of her books are wonderful. The first one about the HSP profile was a life-saver. It made me feel like, "I'm not broken, but just a rare breed not well understood by the mainstream".

A God Send!

Extremely important for learning about the Highly Sensitive Person. I gave this to my therapist to help to treat me and others like me in his practice. As now is known 15% to 20% of the population are such people and must be understood. I had struggled with a diagnose, been medicated for, etc. for bipolar for 40 years only to finally find that I am simply a Highly Sensitive Person. I was taken off bipolar meds and treated properly and my life is completely changed for the better. This book was a God send and the author is the authority in this area.

Since l967, Professor George P.
