An important contribution to military innovation studies, the book also presents an innovation framework applicable to current defence transformation efforts.

This volume describes the origins, uses, and limits of the RMA technologies, examines how each of the five US armed services (categorising the Special Operations as a separate service) made their adjustments both to the technologies and the use of force, and how the role of the civilian officials and the defense industry altered in this process of change and avoidance of change.

The book examines the internal politics of the services as well as civil/military relations to identify the external pressures on the services for significant change in their doctrine and weapons. Many have noted the failure of the services to innovate in what can be called the 'Second Inter-war Period' (the years after the Cold War). This book offers explanations for this failure and arguments about the possible range and desirability of military innovation in the post-Cold war era.

This book will be of great interest to students of strategic studies, US defence politics, military studies, and US politics.

Had to purchase this book for an Environmental Economics course. Very interested in environmental ethics, history, and law but this book was too heavy into economic concepts and some of the chapters really lost me and became boring while others were great! Iffy but a decent read.

Emanuele Padovani is Associate Professor of Accounting and Control in the Public Sector at the University of Bologna, Italy. He has done extensive research and consultancy activities on public management with specific reference to management control, outsourcing, and financial and non-financial performance measurement and management

David W. Young is Professor of Management, Emeritus, at the School of Management, Boston University, USA, where he was affiliated with the Public and Nonprofit Management Program. He teaches at Harvard University’s School of Public Health, and is a visiting professor at IESE Business School, Reykjavik University, the University of Pisa, and the University of Bologna

From an italian perspective this book has a broader target than simply addressing to our managers: different organisational models are taken as examples and study casesare explored.
