The author tried to shed unbiased facts and analysis throughout.
If you want to have a deeper understanding of the basics of Islam and get rid of the misconception, you need to read this. I had to read this book as part of my coursework with Dr. Mandaville and his lectures were as great as the reading itself. Dont listen to the illiterate politicians and read good materials like this and you will have a proper understanding of the subject.

L’Imagination was published in 1936 when Jean-Paul Sartre was thirty years old. Long out of print, this is the first English translation in many years. The Imagination is Sartre’s first full philosophical work, presenting some of the basic arguments concerning phenomenology, consciousness and intentionality that were to later appear in his master works and be so influential in the course of twentieth-century philosophy.

Sartre begins by criticising philosophical theories of the imagination, particularly those of Descartes, Leibniz and Hume, before establishing his central thesis. Imagination does not involve the perception of ‘mental images’ in any literal sense, Sartre argues, yet reveals some of the fundamental capacities of consciousness. He then reviews psychological theories of the imagination, including a fascinating discussion of the work of Henri Bergson. Sartre argues that the ‘classical conception’ is fundamentally flawed because it begins by conceiving of the imagination as being like perception and then seeks, in vain, to re-establish the difference between the two. Sartre concludes with an important chapter on Husserl’s theory of the imagination which, despite sharing the flaws of earlier approaches, signals a new phenomenological way forward in understanding the imagination.

The Imagination is essential reading for anyone interested in the philosophy of Jean-Paul Sartre, phenomenology, and the history of twentieth-century philosophy.

This new translation includes a helpful historical and philosophical introduction by Kenneth Williford and David Rudrauf. Also included is Maurice Merleau-Ponty’s important review of L’Imagination upon its publication in French in 1936.

Phenomenology

I shouldn't have to say this, but to get the most thorough understanding of what Sartre is trying to say, please read the translator's introduction and the footnotes. Sartre was being administered mescaline by none other than the famous Jacques Lacan in order to treat the recurring crab hallucinations which would eventually plague him in old age. The translator's introduction will also be of good use to the thorough student in order to avoid fruitless debates over words that so often ring out in university hallways like clanging bells or crashing symbols.

Sartre has a lot to say in this little work, and I actually feel like he tried to accomplish too much in one book. That makes it very difficult to read and I would not recommend it to an introductory philosophy student. Sartre enters this topic recognizing that he is standing on the shoulders of giants, and makes a point to address many other thinkers without giving any background on their ideas. This is fine useful as it keeps the book condensed to a reasonable size but, if you aren't familiar with what phenomenology is or Hume or Leibniz's interpretation of the imagination, you're going to be lost.

This is Sartre's first full philosophical work. Sartre is introducing phenomenology as a problem by way of perception and imagination. That is, perception is always inherently incomplete. Yet, when a thing is imagined, it is complete. Like any good scholar, he begins by addressing the conversation up to this point from Descartes, Leibniz, and Hume (Just a note, the critique of Leibniz is the reason for the cover art, by the way). Similarly, he goes through many earlier psychological models of imagination and perception.

Long story short, Sartre's issue is that all of these models too literally see the imagination as mirroring perception. The difference, he argues, is that a perception is never complete. That is, if you perceive a wooden chair, it is an external stimulus impressing itself upon your senses. This is where he begins to posit some basic tenets of phenomenology. Your senses ingest the image of the chair, but you cannot fully see all components of the chair simultaneously, nor are you aware of the chair existence beyond your own ability to perceive it. It is incomplete. Whereas, if you imagine a chair, this imagination of the object is complete. The "stimulus" for imagination is your own thinking. He recognizes that all previous models fail to address these nuances and concludes that Husserl's "bracketing" is the the most meaningful model at the time to address these things.

Juan Luis Paramio-Salcines is a Senior Lecturer in Sport Management at Universidad Autonoma de Madrid, Spain. His principal scholarly interest includes sport facilities and event management, commercial development and accessibility provision of stadiums, the economic impact of sport events and Corporate Social Responsibility in Sport. His work has been published in Sport and Society, Soccer and Society, American Journal of Economics and Sociology, Urban Affairs and Sport Management Review.

Kathy Babiak is an Associate Professor of Sport Management at the University of Michigan, and Co-Director of the Michigan Center for Sport Management and the Sport Health and Activity Research and Policy Center for Women and Girls. Her research focuses on the intersection between sport and society – particularly as it relates to social responsibility and the professional sport industry. Her work in this area has appeared in Journal of Business Ethics, Journal of Sport Management, Journal of CSR and the Environment among others.

Geoff Walters is a Lecturer in Management at Birkbeck, University of London and director of the Birkbeck Sport Business Centre. His research interests include board-level governance and corporate responsibility, with a particular focus on the sport industry.
