The book interrogates the fundamental assumptions fuelling many current controversies over representation, idolatry, blasphemy, and political culture. Drawing on debates from Plato’s proposal to banish representational art from his ideal city-state to the Danish cartoons of Mohamed, Preziosi argues that recent debates have echoed a number of very ancient controversies in political philosophy, theology, and art history over the problem of representation and its functions in individual and social life.

This book is a unique re-evaluation of the essential indeterminacy of meaning-making, marking a radically new approach to understanding the inextricability of aesthetics and theology and will be of interest to students and researchers in art history, philosophy and religion and cultural theory.

Donald Preziosi is Professor Emeritus of Art History at UCLA, where he developed the art history critical theory program as well as the UCLA museum studies program. His research, teaching, and writing link together cultural studies, intellectual history, critical theory, and the arts and museologies of various ancient and modern societies.

Critiquing Art history

This is a rather short book, composed of several short “passages”, as Preziosi calls them. Not quite chapters, and not quite individual essays. It is at times a rather difficult read, but very rewarding. It offers more questions than answers (on purpose), and should be of interest to anyone invested/interested in art history (especially academics, obviously, but also a more “general” public - some prior knowledge of what I guess we still call postmodernism or poststructuralism is necessary)

The book offers a reading of Art and Religion as mutually constructed artifices, as mirror images of each other, as sustaining and fabricating each other, and in doing so offers a very strong critique of how art history still functions and how it is taught. It feels very much as a continuation of the work Preziosi has been doing since “Rethinking Art History” in 1991 (that book, and “Brains of the earth's body” are very useful as companions).
There are a lot of (very useful, interesting) references to other books, that as a reader you definitely will want to look for.

Shallow and Pedantic.

First off, I have caught multiple grammatical errors, and I'm only in the third chapter. I have also caught a factual error, and using misleading statistics. I also don't believe that Shapiro knows the proper use of quotation marks. His view of American foreign policy, while right to be critical, is so horribly cynical it does not allow for an honest, academic analysis of the issues in question. I would not recommend this book in any way.

Rhonda Phillips is Professor and Director of the School of Community Resources and Development, Arizona State University. Her research and practice speciality has focused on community well-being including work with community indicator systems and economic development planning. About the Author

Leonard Weinberg is Foundation Professor of Political Science at the University of Nevada. His books include, The Democratic Experience and Political Violence (2001, edited with David Rappaport) and The Emergence of a Euro-American Radical Right (1998, with Jeffrey Kaplan).

Ami Pedahzur is an Associate Professor at the department of government, University of Texas, Austin. His latest publications include: Root Causes of Suicide Terrorism (2006), Political Parties and Terrorist Groups (with Leonard Weinberg, 2003) and The Israeli Response to Jewish Extremism and Violence – Defending Democracy (2002).

Arie Perliger is adjunct faculty member in the School of Political Sciences, University of Haifa and research fellow at the National Security Studies Center in the University of Haifa, Israel.

Extremely important study.

This is an extremely important study by three of the leading academics studying terrorism today. It sheds important light on the relationship between terrorist groups and political parties, which is an understudied topic. Of particular value is the fact that the authors use several methodologies. They delve both deeply into case studies to illustrate the party-terrorist group relationship, but also conduct data analysis which helps them compare cases across regions. As usual, solid work.
