The defining figure is an innocent, naïve young girl being lured or duped into leaving the safety of her village. The trafficking victim is portrayed as "backward"; however, she is "backward" in specific ways that resonate with Nepal’s struggle to resist and yet encompass Western influence. This view may lead to paradoxical effects in which efforts to protect girls and women instead restrict their human rights. Rather than seeing women as universalized victims, Crawford assesses how the social construction of trafficking in a particular society affects girls and women who live in that society.

In this book, the author’s voice as a woman, a feminist, and a social scientist immersed in a "foreign" way of life, illuminates aspects of this process and highlights the subjectivity of urban women. It makes the connection between Nepali subjectivities and a problem of international significance, the trafficking of girls and women. The book provides a model for other locally grounded accounts of sex trafficking to counter the universalizing rhetoric of the mass media and some anti-trafficking activists, filling a niche in South Asian Studies and Women’s Studies.

Gary R. Edgerton is Eminent Scholar, Professor and Chair of the Communication and Theatre Arts Department at Old Dominion University, USA. Michael T. Marsden is Professor of English, American Studies and Media Studies and Dean of the College and Academic Vice President Emeritus at St. Norbert College, USA. He is also Professor Emeritus of Popular Culture at Bowling Green State University, USA. One of the founding faculty members of the Department of Popular Culture at Bowling Green State University, he has co-edited ten volumes, written scores of scholarly articles on a wide range of topics within Popular Culture Studies and American Culture Studies, and was one of the founding editors of the Journal of Popular Film and Television almost four decades ago.

Social kind analysis also opens a path for the development of today’s moral realism by suggesting the need for a systematic study of the causal structures of social life. In this respect the importance of normative themes in Marxism is defended against claims that the Marxist tradition lacks the resources to call capitalism unjust or to defend morality and human rights.

The origin of capital, Marx suggests, can be found in the rupture of an original unity between the laborer and the means of labor, and the book explores the way a structure of separations best characterizes capital as a social kind. This uncovers a little developed emphasis in Marx’s work – his focus on the phenomena of separation that define our lives and also on forms of association required to transcend them. Given that capitalism has made the instruments of labor instruments of social labor, forms of association that would recover worker control over them must be democratic. ‘This is a very important book. It not only makes a distinctive and original contribution to Marxism, it is also important for philosophers of science and moral theory. Marx’s dialectical materialism fits into neither of the prevailing conceptions of inquiry: reductionist, ahistorical, atheoretical positivism or postmodernist constructivism. Engelskirchen articulates on Marx’s behalf a sophisticated non-reductionist materialism grounded in the contemporary philosophy of science, philosophy of language and the metaphysics of natural kinds. The question of Marx aside, Engelskirchen’s realist conception of social science is a fundamental contribution to the literature of the philosophy of science and will be of interest to anyone who, in pursuing the study of complex phenomena, seeks to avoid a forced choice between positivism and postmodernism.

The book will be equally important for philosophers interested in moral theory. Marx is a deep critic of bourgeois moral and legal values but his normative concerns are also in some sense continuous with the values he criticizes. This is the classic question of commensurability/incommensurability in the sense of Kuhn. Engelskirchen’s treatment is a marvel of dialectical sophistication. He brilliantly extends his non-reductionist approach to the epistemology and semantics of natural kinds to illuminate the respects of continuity and difference between bourgeois and Marxist normative conceptions. Here too the results will be important to those who until now may have paid little attention to Marx. Anyone interested in how normative conceptions change over time will find in Engelskirchen’s approach a convincing alternative to relativist conceptions.’

Just what I needed

COFFEE CULTURE presents an illuminating overview of coffee as a commodity that ties the world together. Tucker explores its multiple meanings and uses, along with its
checkered and dramatic history, in a delightful read. She interweaves theoretical insights from anthropology and social sciences in a down-to-earth manner, highlighted with a touch of humor. Her personal contacts and appreciation for the people enlivens the text. Students will certainly respond positively to her creative approach in dealing with this complex subject.

Easy read, full of information.

Very in depth overview of the history and development of coffee drinking around the world. It it a short read that gives enough information to touch on health concerns and changes in products as well as plantations that farm it. I needed this for a class and it did the job.

Our society is coffee culture but no one really knows about the production, fair trade, environmental impacts, or gender equality issues. This book really touches upon every point and makes it interesting!
